Q. What is Mr. Moly?

Mr. MOLY is a product range of specialty lubricants, most of which are based on molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). They are designed to provide additional performance, economy, and longevity to automotive consumers and enthusiasts, fleet operators, and industrial users. When added to the engine oil, transmission or differential fluids, the MoS2 circulates with the oil and plates onto the metal surfaces, enhancing the fluid’s lubricating and protective properties by preventing metal to metal contact.

Q. What is Molybdenum Disulfide?

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a naturally occurring mineral, formed and mined with other ores in various parts of the world. It is highly refined and processed into 0.5-micron average particle size at which time it can be used as a “solid lubricant.” It possesses the properties of being able to withstand extremely high load capacities (400,000 psi). It is chemically stable, has a very low coefficient of friction (0.05 to 0.09 in powder form) and has thermostability over 2,000F. All of these properties are essential to reduce metal to metal contact and thereby reduce friction, heat, and wear.

Q. Why is OIL SUPPLEMENT considered most beneficial for “dry starts”?

Dry starts occur after the engine has been turned off for several hours. During this period, the oil tends to seep from the passages and dissipates from the cylinder walls, valve stems, camshaft, etc. When the engine is restarted, there is no lubrication until the oil is pumped back into circulation. This is considered the time when the highest amount of wear occurs in an engine. It can be virtually eliminated with the plating of Moly.

Q. Can I use Mr. Moly in my new car?

Mr. MOLY OIL SUPPLEMENT, or any other solid lubricant, should not be added during the new car break-in period (about the first 2,000 miles). However, our Mr. MOLY Break-In, a soluble molybdenum without the plating capabilities, is recommended for use during this period.

Q. Can Mr. Moly OIL SUPPLEMENT be used in a diesel engine?

Absolutely!.....and with great results.

Q. Should Mr. Moly be used in a high mileage car?

Yes, and it could help prolong the life. However, it is not intended to be a cure in a can. It will not “fix” a pre-existing problem. Best results are gained if Moly is used throughout the vehicle’s life.

Q. Can Mr. Moly be used in transmissions, transaxles, and differentials?

Yes, and with excellent results. But caution: there are different formulations for each application, especially for automatic transmissions and limited-slip differentials. Mr. MOLY GEAR OIL SUPPLEMENT for manual transmissions and NON-limited slip differentials. Mr. MOLY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SUPPLEMENT for automatic transmissions, limited-slip differentials, and other units with wet clutches.

Q. Are the chemical additives sold at mass-merchandisers, grocery stores, and drug stores considered to be solid lubricants?

Generally not. Most of these chemically produced products are intended to be viscosity enhancers, fortifiers, or cleansers and may perform a specific function; they don't have any plating capabilities.

Q. Can Mr. Moly be used with synthetic oils?

Yes. Although synthetic oils are designed to outlast mineral oils and have a very good high temperature stability, they sometimes have a lower sheer strength. MoS2 has a sheer strength in excess of 200,000 psi., and therefore is an excellent supplement to synthetic oils.

Q. Is Mr. Moly OIL SUPPLEMENT worth using if I change my oil every 2,000 or 3,000 miles?

The MoS2 uses the oil as a carrier to circulate throughout the engine and plate onto all points of contact under heat and pressure. Once the Moly has plated (after about two hours of driving time), the oil could be removed but the Moly will remain on the surfaces for several thousand miles. Therefore, we recommend that Mr. MOLY be added every 6,000 miles regardless of how often the oil is changed.

Q. Can a solid lubricant eliminate the whining in the rear end of my car?

Yes it can. Whining is usually caused by metal-to-metal contact, which is eliminated by the presence of MoS2. Again, it is very important to use the proper product depending on whether it is a standard or limited-slip differential.

Q. Will Mr. Moly OIL SUPPLEMENT help free sticker valves and lifters?

Yes, it can, although that is not its primary function. The continued use of Mr. MOLY and regular oil change habits would prevent these problems in the first place.

Q. If I am already using a chemical additive or a PTFE supplement, can I change to Mr. Moly without doing any harm?

Yes!...it might be a good idea to flush the engine first in order to receive the full benefits of the Moly.

Q. Can oil change intervals be extended with the use of Mr. Moly?

It is recommended that you stay within the manufacturers’ suggested intervals, regardless of whether using Mr. MOLY or any other oil supplement or additive.

Q. Will the use of this product invalidate my warranty?

No. This product in no way alters the oil or the engine. It merely uses the oil as a carrier to reach the critical points in need of plating.

Q. What if the directions on other products say, “Shake well before using?”

Don’t use that product at all! It means that the product tends to separate and the majority of the lubricating particles could end up in the bottom of the oil pan with no benefit. Also, if particles settle out, the are probably too large to pass through the oil filter.

Q. Why don’t the oil companies include Mr. Moly in their products?

Their products are made to meet the specifications of the car manufacturers. To include MoS2 would far surpass the required specifications and keep them from being price competitive. They are meeting the requirements of the engine manufacturers rather then the discriminating element to improve performance and longevity.

Q. What is the difference between Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) and Teflon (PTFE) in terms of Solid Lubricants?

Both materials are very slippery. Molybdenum Disulfide, or Moly, is a naturally occurring inert mineralization that will sustain loads in excess of 400,000 psi, while PTFE, a manufactured chemical, can only sustain loads in the 350 to 450 psi range. MoS2 remains effective up to its melting point exceeding 2,000F while PTFE forms a noxious gas near 650F. Some of this gas will invariably bypass the rings. Additionally, PTFE particle size is inconsistent and generally too large to remain in suspension in the oil. PTFE tends to “ball-up” or congeal at high temperatures, creating the possibility of plugging oil passages or pick-up screens.

Q. What is the difference between Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) and Graphite in terms of Solid Lubricants?

Natural Graphite is a filler and does not possess to the same degree the plating capabilities of MoS2. Like Moly, Graphite is a mineral, and has a low coefficient of friction and can be relatively small in particle side. However, it cannot sustain the loads that Moly can and will, therefore, wear sooner and have a much shorter useful life.

Q. Will OIL SUPPLEMENT save gas?

Independent tests have concluded savings of up to 14.44%. Individual testimonials have suggested even greater savings. We do not anticipate this high of a percentage of savings in every application but do expect a favorable savings to cost ratio in every situation. Simply stated, a reduction in friction generates improved efficiency that translates into more miles per gallon.

Q. What other benefits can be expected from the use of Mr. MOLY?

The primary result is the reduction of friction. The results of lowered friction are lower operating temperatures, reduced wear, reduced fuel consumption, reduced emissions, prolonged life, and increased horsepower.

Q. Why does the particle size of the solid lubricant make a difference?

Larger size particles will settle out of the oil and into the pan almost immediately. They are of no benefit. Additionally, those particles that do circulate, if too large, will be trapped by the oil filter or will plug the pick-up screen. Some filters on the market today have the ability to filter down to 5 microns. The average particle size of Mr. MOLY Engine Aide is 0.5 microns.

Q. Is OIL SUPPLEMENT effective for high speed driving on the Interstate?

Yes. Independent tests have shown that Mr. MOLY Engine Aide will reduce oil temperature rise and water temperature rise by 10% or more when running for long periods at high RPM. There is also the safety factor to consider: Mr. MOLY lubrication remains effective while conventional lubricants lose some of their efficiency due to low pressure or high temperature. When traditional lubricants are under their most stressful conditions, Mr. MOLY’s unique characteristics are at their best.

Q. Why does my oil look dirty when I use Moly?

The natural color of Moly is dark grey/black. When mixed and circulated with motor oil, it turns the oil dark grey as well. Engine oil should be changed based on mileage and use; not just color.
